Autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland is gradually destroyed.

Q – What is Hashimoto’s Disease? And how you you treat it?
Hashimoto’s disease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a condition that leads to hypothyroidism.

Q – Are there are 4 types of diabetes?

Thyroid gland
Endocrine gland in the neck consisting of two connected lobes.

Hyperthyroidism
Condition that occurs due to excessive production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland.

Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid or low thyroid, is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

TSH =
Thyroid-stimulating hormone
thyroxine (T4)
triiodothyronine (T3)

Goiter
Swelling in the neck resulting from an enlarged thyroid gland.

The thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormones.

Traces in most foods are very modest
Good sources = Iodized salt, sea vegetables (2.5 g of dried nori (sushi) = 40 mcg.

Jeanne uses: Kombu kelp = contain up to 2,984 mcg of iodine per seaweed sheet (1 gram).

Cause of hypo or hyperthyroidism?
Autoimmune attack = you begin to attack your own thyroid gland

Signs and symptoms of PCOS include irregular or no menstrual periods, heavy periods, excess body and facial hair, acne, pelvic pain, difficulty getting pregnant, and patches of thick, darker, velvety skin.

Androgen
Any natural or synthetic steroid hormone that regulates the development and maintenance of male characteristics by binding to androgen receptors..

Can foods help you keep a healthy head of hair?

In hair follicles, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the baldness trigger and causes hair follicles to gradually shrink and stop producing hair all together.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)
Glycoprotein that binds to androgens and estrogens.

So how do foods fit into keeping a healthy head of hair?
Researchers noticed that boldness was less common among Asians than in whites.
As Asian countries began to westernize, baldness was one of the conditions that was more prevalent
. A low-fat, plant-based diet encourages your body to build more sex hormone binding globulin
SHBG rain in testosterone and keeps it active until it is needed.

In 2009 researchers compared 80 young men with progressive hair loss 280 men without hair loss. What did they find?
Balding man were more likely to have insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is linked to hair loss in both men and women

What are some of the other causes of hair loss?
obviously Poor diet
Thyroid disease
Various medications

So can we do to keep our skin and hair healthy?
Avoid animal products
Avoid adding oils in cooking

Avoid high fat foods (peanut butter, avocados, etc.)

Avoid added sugars
Have adequate protein from plant sources

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
Protect your skin from excess sun exposure
