The Maasai Mara game park is arguably Kenya's most popular game sanctuary. It is the best known and most patronized game reserve in Kenya.

The Masai people who inhabit the Mara and the environs are strongly independent people who still value tradition and ritual as a crucial part of their existence. Traditionally, the Masai rarely hunt and existing along with wildlife peacefully is an important part of their beliefs. Lions and Wildebeest play an important role in their cultural beliefs as their own herds of cattle. This exceptional co-existence of man and wildlife makes this Masai land certainly the world's most unique wilderness regions.

Each and every year the Mara plays host to the world's greatest natural event, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life giving grass in the north pulls in over 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single colossal herd. They pour across the border into the Mara, making a spectacular entrance in a surging column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon.

At the Mara River they load together on the banks before ultimately plunging forward through the raging waters, creating frenzy as they battle against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.

The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of rebirth of the grasslands, but also for the predators that follow the herds.

The Masai Mara has been named the Kingdom of Lions and these regal and strong hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.

The Mara is a great natural speculate, a place where Masai morans share the plains with hunting lions, a place of mighty herds and ageless cycles of life, death and regeneration.

Wildlife moves freely in and out of the reserve and around neighboring Masai lands. On the outside of the boundaries of the park, can be found many small camp sites and lodges, some of which provide walking, horse riding and other safari options.

The Loita Hills and the Nguruman escarpment, both considered holy to the Masai, provide high forest trekking possibilities for the adventurous traveller.

How to get there:

Road access to Masai Mara is through Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may choose to fly to the Mara, which is serviced by 4 man airstrips. Daily routine flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are offered. Private Charters also use these airstrips. Accessing the Mara area is difficult without private transport.

Masai Mara Safari:

Most vacationers visit Masai Mara as part of a safari package from Nairobi or in a hired car. The park has very well set up internal roads and tracks. Accessing areas outside the reserve is only possible using simple public transport, and finding your way around can be difficult.
